Cats love the cat towers and cat posts. Even at 2-3 years of age, they are still very kitten-like and will often use towers and whatnot well up into their years. I like 3 levels, and if it has hidey-baskets or hidey nests they love them. Carpeted surfaces seem to be my cats favorite surface and it's gentle on paws and claws. I usually take the teaser toys off of ours. I don't like things with string on something like a cat tower. Too dangerous. I do suggest shopping around for your cat towers/furniture. The best ones I've found have been from Drs. Foster and Smith website. They turn out to be a little cheaper than places like PetCo and PetSmart. More bang for your buck.

One word of caution....sometimes they get a little overzealous and can fall off until they get used to the pattern of climbing something new....we took a thick old comforter and put it over some pillows underneath our cat tree. When they fell, particularly as kittens, they just bounce a little bit. No broken bones or bruises!

Even my old cats still use the tree. They don't play as much but they still use it to scratch & sleep in.
You don't need anything too fancy but the tall ones seem to please best. Look for one that has a cubby to curl up in & if you can find one with sisal (rather than carpet) covered posts that's better yet!

Best wishes & thanks for adopting!
References :
Retired tech, former shelter manager.

I took 2 four year olds on from a rescue, they both love those multilevel climbers. If you are getting a high one make sure the base is firm enough to support it, It has long scratching columns, Plus fairly secure. I have 5 of different sizes and one is really wobbly due to bad design.
References :
My cats LOVE theirs!! Its seriously the best money I spent on them. They spend all day in them, I have 2 towers and 2 cats and its constant entertainment. Look for one with variety, some places to hide, some to jump, some to lay on. Also, make sure it has some scratching surfaces. Cats love to scratch their trees because they are nice and tall. But definitely get one, most cats adore them, you won't regret it!
