I want to build a "cat condo", the house type things out of carpet and wood for my kittens…?
Posted by: admin : Category: cat condos
I do not know where to begin or how to secure the carpet ect.. Any ideas and/or suggestions would be great. Thanks!!!
PLaces like home depot sometimes have scrap carpet.
Try a lumber yard for scrap wood.
good luck

Particle board works nicely, regular roofing nails will secure the carpet in place enough so that even a strong cat cannot pull it off.

My dad made one a few years back. He had these thick cardboard cylinders that he put on top of one another and put a thick piece of cardboard down between them and had some carpet that some one had gave to him and he measured around the tall cylinder and then cut around the piece of cardboard so he could carpet them. He had a hard time getting the carpet to stick to the cylinder so he ended up gluing it and tying things around it to hold the carpet in place so the glue could dry.

I built one for a friend of mine. I used something like MDF, but it was cheaper. I got carpet from Home Depot, I basically bought stuff that they had on sale, which was left overs from a huge roll. Then, I got rope for the pole thingy. I bought the plans online on how to make it.
To get the carpet to lay flat, I used a combo of hot glue and staples. The pole thing that pretty much heald the house up, I put rope around it, for a cat scratching pole thing. It was actually pretty cool. I did nail and glue the house together, and then screwed it onto the pole, which was screwed into the base.
Not sure what all tools you have, but you can cut all the parts using a jig saw. You don’t need high quality wood, since you are going to cover it.
Good luck!

my friend used to build those & sell them. you can find plans online (search "how to build a cat condo" i just found a LOT) you often have to buy the plans, but some come with some free materials. (and the plans aren’t that expensive)
usually you would staple the carpet to the wood (won’t work as well if you use the thick cardboard, but still might). go to a home improvement store & ask about securing carpet.
wrapping posts with sisal is good, too, and easy. you just have to attach the ends, wrap securelly. you can glue one side if it needs more security.

First of all, I have made my cats a "condo" and now looking back (although proud of my work) I would do what I just did recently and buy one off of e-bay. In the long run it was cheeper and WAY bigger and cooler than the one I made. That said if you really want to make your own here a few suggestions. I made mine about 5 feet tall like a bookshelf with particle board and 2 x 4′s (home depot) and "tunnels" made out of this thick cardboard tube they use to make concrete pilings ( get these at a place that caters more toward contractors in your area.) I got the carpet from a carpet store in the back where they sell all of the left overs, remnants and junk. I then attached the carpet with gorilla glue ( very tough and sticky and you can get it at most all hardware stores) and a big staple gun. The one I made has so far lasted for about 10 years and the cats still sleep in it but like I said, it was a bigger task than I thought it would be in the beginning. There were alot of power tools involved – table saw to cut the wood, drill to assemble etc. The ones I got online from amarkat are about 8 feet tall and cost about $100 with shipping (smaller ones $40 and up) and were very well made and easy to assemble and so knowing what I know now I would never make another one. Good luck and have fun!

My husband and I built a cat condo a couple of years ago. It turned out to be more expensive than we planned and wasn’t the best quality. There’s a place online that sells them and they’re affordable. We spent the same amount of money, but got a much nicer cat tree than the one we built.
Good luck!
