How can I make my cat stop scratching my furniture?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: cat furniture

We have had our cat for 8 years and she scratches all of our furniture. We have had to put sheets over our brand new couches so she doesn’t ruin them. What can make her stop this?

I had the same problem. Bought a cat scratcher (she used it a little bit) but I bought this cardboard thing at walmart (5$) that has catnip you put on the top and she loves it! She plays with it and scratches like crazy! He nails are now filed. it is uncomfortable for them to have long nails. Don’t declaw, its very painful and traumatizing for the cat.

Here is somewhat what the scratcher looks like. Again, walmart for 5$

if you have a petsmart near you they have a spray that you mist your furniture with and it deters the cat from scratching. any more questions paigedankof@yahoo.com i worked at petsmart for four years and i recommended it quite often.

There is a lot of options, but first understand why she is doing this! maybe shes bored? she needs attention? her nails hurt?(she wants a pedicure joke!peace!:))

    1) Buy a scratching post

    2) Scold her tell her shes being a bad kitty!(spray with water maybe?)

    3) Play with her shes bored! maybe!

    4) Groom her make her feel important show her love, because she might just want some attention from your family.

    5) Cut her nails so it does ruin your beautiful furniture(I don’t mean cutting it that it is gone like file it with a nail cutter for animals make her nails round at the tip it will prevent it from damaging the furniture because it won’t get stuck on her nails while she scratches it)

    get ready for thumbs down…

but speak to vet about deterrents etc for scratching as there are many. Last ditch effort would be declaw–and yes can be done at this age…pain medication afterwards is the key. Speak yo your local vet for more advice. If you have had cat for years–likely ingrained into his things to do each day and may evwen take animal behaviorist.
Decalw should be last step if all else fails.

Now waiting for all thumbs down from laymen! BTDT
