  1. My brother made a cat tree. It’s essentially just a platform for the cats to jump up and lay on. You need carpet and my brother used leftover construction materials. One was this big and solid round column. You need wood. I don’t think it’s going to be that easy unless you know what you are doing. You want to make sure that there is good support there. I’m sure you could find a book at Home Depot or something.

  2. just get a pic of one n follow how it looks if uve ever built stuff before it should be ok i wanted to do the same thing but i bout a little one for like 20 bucks but i only have one cat so its fine for her teh may have like a website with blueprints or something like that too n maybe u could pick different designs i just dont really kno how i would tell u to build something i dunno lol but i was taking picks of different ones apparently they have the real hard carboard like tubes at home depot or lowes so u can do the round parts too

  3. It would be more rewarding to build your own, but I think it would be cheaper to buy one already made. You an always add to it to make it more fun for them. I made a simple one for my cats, but it ended up being more trouble and more money than buying one. It definitely is not as elaborate as I wanted but it worked. I used a 4×4 post, with staggared shelves and covered with carpet. They seem to like it, just wish it was nicer. Made mine in a hurry. I’m sure it would have been better if I had had the time.
    Good luck

  4. Get a length of "sono-tube" from the building supply store. (These are the cardboard tubes that they pour concrete in to make round posts.)You can glue carpet to the outside and inside of it and cut an opening or two or whatever and put a board on top and add to that.
Or you can go simpler and forget the sonotube and just nail a 4×4 post to a plywood foot and nail a plywood platform on the other end and carpet that and do whatever you desire. In the end the cat will either use it as a scratching post and tree house or they won’t.

  5. I never did this, but I dreamed of it a lot. I mean, you can go to a high-end liquor store and try to get a bunch of wooden wine crates. They are beautiful, and they are free. You don’t want to finish the wood, because finishes are poison, but you can oil the wood, and olive oil or vegetable oil works really well. You can probably buy a gallon of vegetable oil for not much money. The wood absorbs the oil completely, and you would want to oil the boxes several times. Spray them well with Lysol, first. Oil, let it absorb; oil; let it absorb — 3 or 4 times. You could, if you wanted, get some carpet scraps — and I do mean scraps. The pieces no one can do anything with and so they will give it to you, or sell you a small piece for a song. Sisal would be nice, but whatever you prefer.

Meanwhile, go home and pick out a wall that will belong to your cats, or a portion of a wall. You are going to put up brackets on the wall (as you would for shelving), but you are going to mount the wooden wine crates, with carpeted insides onto the brackets. You don’t have to mount every box flat. Some of them you can mount on their sides (so you make a Mondrian-like pattern) and you create stair-steps and buckets and scratching posts going up or along one of your walls.

So, you will need wine crates first (so you know how many you have to work with), then begin to visualize an arrangement on a wall (someplace where they can be in a bucket and look out a window would be nice), then buy your brackets, screws and liquid nails. Get your oil. Come home and oil the boxes the first time — they will absorb the oil fast, and you want to seal the raw wood a little, so you will be able to oil again when you get back home with — the carpet samples.

Liquid Nails stinks until it dries, so after you get home with the carpet samples and oil the crages a second time, you will want to carpet the inside of the crates, to get that step done and get that glue to drying.

    Have a ball!

  6. Hi
You can start with some fairly small squares of plywood, one for each level.

Then some cardboard tubing for in between each level.
Using screws to attach the pieces is a good idea, that way you can always dismantle it for moving around the house.

Cover each piece with carpeting, they can use this as a scratching post too!

Also a circle cut out in the tubing allows a hiding place for them to play in.
Another idea for a different level is a curved piece of cardboard covered with carpet (bright colored) to lay around in, looking out the windows!

    Have fun.

  7. I agree it would be cheaper to buy one, unless you have free access to the materials. A landscape timber makes a good post, cover it with rope or carpet. Use a bucket from something like detergent or litter and cut off the ends, then carpet it inside and out with remnants or an old throw rug. and fasten the tube securely to the top of the post, by placing it on it’s side and drilling a small hole through then run a good sized screw with a washer through the hole and into the top of the post. Use a heavy piece of plywood or some 1 x 6′s for the base. You can drill a hole in the bucket and attach a piece of beaded chain or twine with a cat toy tied to one end and let it dangle about 1/2 way from the floor. You can elaborate on this as much as you want and end up with a whole cat forest. Hint: to really get your kittens into it, it may help to rub the whole thing down with one of your unlaundered (dirty) sweaters to get your scent all over it.

  8. Try ebay. I got a 5′ cat condo for $35 – BRAND NEW. The condo itself was$.99 and the shipping was the rest, but to buy it regularly would have been about $200. Totally worth it…
