how do I make my cat stop scratching furniture?

startedproduct

My cat of 13 years has started to scratch any wood furniture in the house. Is there anything I can do to make him stop?

We ended up going the cheap route for our cat and bought two-sided tape. We applied it to the furniture where she always tried to scratch it and it immediately worked. She couldn’t stand getting her paws stuck on the tape. It was cheap and entertaining to watch. You should definitely try it! I was really amazed at how quickly it worked. By the way, this was recommended to us by someone who works at a pet store. We were going to buy the expensive spray stuff makes cats stay away from certain areas and she suggested trying the tape first. Sure enough, she was right! Good luck. icon smile how do I make my cat stop scratching furniture?

  1. When you see him doing it squirt him with a watergun. He will stop and run off unless you have one of those cats that like a bath

  2. What ever you do DON’T declaw him. Get a spray bottle and whenever your cat is scratching spray him. He should start to associate scratching with getting sprayed, so he should stop. Good luck.

  3. I just either scare him when I hear him doing it or I use a squirt bottle to scare him away he has now stopped but I did buy him a scratching post and spray it with catnip spray to get him interested in it

  4. Please see http://www.catscratching.com for a lot of great suggestions on how to train your cat to use a scratching post instead.

To stop him from damaging your furniture while he’s learning to use his posts and not the furniture, you can trim your cat’s claws to blunt them. This link has instructions: http://www.catscratching.com/htmls/article.htm

Softpaws nail caps can help too – they are little plastic caps that fit over the cat’s nails so they won’t damage the furniture. http://www.softpaws.com

Even though he’s 13, it’s not too late for him to learn where to scratch & where not to scratch. My oldest cat was 16 when I trained her to stop scratching the couch. Good luck!

I trained my cats to stop scratching the furniture & to start using their posts by using the info at http://www.catscratching.com and also using softpaws on them to prevent damage while they learned. It worked!

  6. Dont be meen to him. But you should move him away from it that way he knoes hes not suppost to do that. If that dosent work then buy a cat skraching post

  7. There are ‘no scratch’ sprays you can get from a pet shop. they contain smells that cat’s dislike, at the same time you can use a catnip spray on a scratchie post to encourage the cat to use the post

  8. Clawing is a natural reflex and he should be able to do it. You can reduce the damage by getting plastic covers to put over his claws. You can also buy a scratching post and encourage him to use it.
