What should I look for in good cat furniture?

I have one indoor cat who is very active and loves to climb. In the future, we will probably get at least one more cat. I want to get a large cat tree for her to climb on and scratch and take naps in. I’ve heard that special attention must be paid to things like width of base and what materials are used. What should I look for in a good cat tree? Any recommendations/horror stories of specific brands and models? Thanks!

I bought this one for my cats http://www.armarkat.com/a7101.htm
The absolutely love it. The faux fur covering is tougher than carpet. My big guys haven’t tipped it over yet but you might want to secure yours to the ceiling or wall. Armarkat has 100′s of styles and sizes to choose from. They assemble in less than 15 minutes and include a tool.

  1. Cats love to use their claws so buy or make something that is covered in carpet. They love tunnels and boxes and love to climb up them. Design them so the cat can sleep thinking that he is hiding out and protercted. I saw a cat tree that was manufactured that costs a thousand dollars and was a cats dream. Plenty to climb and plenty or places to crawl into and/or jump. They think that they’re still in the jungle.

  3. As a lifelong cat owner of many and cat rescuer of many, my experience is not to get the rope type (it falls off in grizzly mess or unravels), get a wide base to avoid tipping when kitty gets rambunctuous.
And IF possible get a cat pole with "Berber" type carpetting INSTEAD of the usual "Pile" type (the pile carpet makes a daily mess all over the floor, pulls off, whereas berber just pulls up ‘catches’).
Also at least 3 1/2 feet high with platforms and a house would be ideal.

  4. I just use ordinary cat scratching posts – just make sure that they have a good wide base for stability.

I would go for several simple ones rather than one fancy expensive one – that way you can have them placed around the house so that there is always one close by.

In my experience it isn’t worth spending a lot on one with sleeping places as they never use them … typical cats ;-) (Mine NEVER sleep in anything that I have provided expressly for them to sleep in, but prefer human beds, chairs, washing or even the bathroom basin LOL)

  6. I had a wonderful cat tree that lasted my cat’s entire lifetime (20 years). I got it from angelicalcat.com. It’s extremely sturdy and you can specify carpet or hemp as well as colors.
