How can I make an easy and effective cat scratching post?

limitedproduct

I have limited handiness but am baffled on why people pay $100+ for a kitty condo when it’s made out of $10 worth of supplies. Can anybody reccommend an alternative?

use a piece of untreated 4×4 for the post. make a nice stable base out of plywood or something flat, the heavier the better(within reason) There is no need for carpet or anything fancy, if they are going to scratch they prefer the wood to the carpet anyway. If you want a platform then make a platform big enough for the cat to lay on comfortably. To get the cats interest give it a shot of catnip oil or just rub some catnip on it.

  1. Check a woodworking magazine or book out of the library and see if you can come up with a design, then build it yourself. Most people pay $100 for $10 of material because they don’t have the skills to build it themselves, or because it’s darn convenient…lol

  2. you can buy one at walmart for $20 or you can screw a 4X4 to a piece of plywood and cover the whole thing with carpet (staple it down) easy as pie!

  3. for an easy scratching post, get a piece of 4X4 and a piece of plywood, cut it to size and wrap it with rope..you can buy that at any craft store….if you’re talking about making kitty condos, get some plywood, (you can usually get imperfect ones at a lumber store at a cheaper price) and get a roll of carpet remnants. cut the plywood, piece it together in whatever configuration you want, cut some holes in it, cover it in the carpet using glue or a staple gun, and viola…..if you get enough, you can make a few and sell some to re-coup some of the cost of making your own.

  5. 18 Inches of 2 or 3 inch round timber fixed to base of choice. post covered /wrapped in old smooth type carpet, cheap as chips, works.

    built same.

  6. I made one by wrapping a 4×4 piece of wood with sisal rope and then attaching it to a base that I covered in carpet. I made a tall one, which my cat likes much better than the last one I bought, which was wrapped in carpet.

  7. Cats like to chase things, scratch and gnaw. Take a roll of yarn, tie a little string or yarn around it to make it a little less likely to unravel, let the cat get a look at it, and give it a toss. Or: Get an old wooden table leg or old baseball bat (can pick up at yard sale for about $1.00) Cover with old carpet, nail, screw staple..whatever, to a piece of plywood or something like an old cabinet door. Two cheep but effective ways to go.
