Tips on Buying a Cat Bed
By Paul Hegarty

There are many cat beds available to choose from. Knowing a little about what comfort your cat seeks can help you select a bed that it will not only use but enjoy. It can be quite frustrating buying a bed only to have your cat continue to use the furniture or alternative place rather than the bed. Getting your cat used to the bed from an early age will have her seeking out the bed for sleep in the future.

When your kitten is ready for a nap gently place her in the bed and stroke her so she settles. (She may well be ready for a nap after eating or playing.) The location of the bed is very important. Cats and kittens like to have a good view of their home. If your home is new territory to them, placing the bed in a quiet corner of a room or under a table will help her feel protected from threats.

Here is a list of the types of cat beds available:

• Plastic
• Wicker
• Covered / Hooded
• Beanbag
• Cardboard Box
• Cushioned or fake-fur
• Sleeping bags
• Fleecy round beds
• Duvets
• Four-poster
• Radiator cradle

There are pros and cons for each bed which include the expense of the bed, whether the bed is difficult to clean and comfort level. The main focus ought to be that the bed and bedding is easy to clean. A number of beds like the radiator cradle can harbor fleas if not washed regularly.

Another factor is the size of the bed. Cats and kittens alike prefer to curl up in a small bed. To avoid buying several beds as your kitten grows, buy a bed that she can use when she is fully grown. To reduce the excess spaces add a blanket or bedding.

Bedding should have good insulation, materials such as blankets, fleece, a pillow or cushion and veterinary pet bedding are all good sources. Your cats bed should also provide protection from draughts and be easily accessible. Buying a radiator cradle bed for an elder cat is not ideal, even though it provides the warmth your cat needs, it may find it too hard to access being raised off the floor.

Some cats simply do not take to a bed and prefer your bed or furniture; it is still a good idea to keep a cat bed for your cat. This will provide it with a safe place if she ever needs her own space. Having a few beds to place in your cats favorite places may very well limit their time on your furniture. Placing a duvet on your furniture for your cat keeps them happy and protects your furniture at the same time.

Our male cat loves to lounge on the dining room table. I placed a pillow and blanket on the table for a few months and then moved them to another table (the office desk). Which now leaves our dining room table cat free the majority of the time. He also likes to sleep on occasion in our lazy chair, I have tried placing a cat bed on the chair, but he rejected that and moved off to another chair. Our female cat loves to sleep on the office chair and we have placed a cat pad on the chair which she sleeps on happily. We are also cat-sitting a cat who is very determined to sleep on our bed most of the day and night, particularly if we are in it.

Each cat and kitten will have their own preference for a cat bed. Choosing a bed early on and spending the time to train your cat to seek out the bed for sleep will benefit both of you. If you acquire or adopt an older cat, or a determined kitten pay particular attention to the location of the bed. Cats love snug places and they need to feel safe and secure.

Cat Nap Area

Where Does Your Cat Nap? Make Him As Comfortable As Possible
By Niall Kennedy

Giving your pet his own snoozing area gives you the ability to take back all of the space in your house that he has taken over. You may even want to give him several places to call his own to keep him happy!

You’ll find a cat bed that fits your tastes, and your pets, because there are so many out there to choose from. You’ll find a colorful cat bed in fun pet prints that will add a touch of whimsy to the room you put it in. You’ll find designer brands to choose from as well. You can also choose based on how the bed feels too.

Many cat beds have a pillows made of fleece to keep them warm. They are oval shaped and have high sides or they may be completely enclosed. Cats like to find a secure, warm spot to rest. For many, getting into the tight warm couch cushion seems like the ideal place.

You will find that some beds you can choose from are heated as well. If the cat spends time on the porch or in other chilly areas, you may want to give him one of these heated beds to warm up with.

Have you purchased a great bed for your cat but he’s ignoring it? Don’t be surprised at this. If he just doesn’t seem interested, add a catnip toy to the bed to attract him to it. Make sure that you place it in a cat friendly location too which will help to make it appealing to him. Cats don’t want to nap in low places so you may want to put the bed on an end table or platform that is just a bit off the ground. You’ll need to keep it from being in the midst of heavy people traffic as well. He needs to be able to relax and sleep there or he won’t want to be there.

Does your cat shed? Place the nap mat where your cat normally sleeps and then store it when you have guests. The cushions that are under the mat will then be hair free.

Some pets enjoy a perch. These are padded shelves that have become very popular. You can attach the cat perch to your windowsill so that the cat can look out the window at the birds or just bathe in the sun.

More than one cat can means more than one bed as cats are territorial and don’t like sharing their beds. You may be able to look for a kitty version of a play gym or a cat condo. These allow several cats to nap in elevated spots. And, the cat condo has areas where they can climb and sharpen claws.

If your cat likes to nap on your couch cushions, giving him a bed is the ideal way to make him comfortable and provide him with a place other than your furniture to nap on!

Cat Nip Cat Mats

Cat Beds, Cat Supplies, Cat Toys 1 Comment »

Purrfectly Simple Cat Mat & Toys
By Kara Kelso

You’ve seen the expensive cat beds in stores and maybe even purchased one or two for your favorite feline. But if they immediately turned their nose away from it, or you are looking for a more cost effective and less bulky bed, read on.

Louella’s Goodies recently sent me a cat nip cat mat and 2 toys for my 5 loveable cats. As soon as I sat down to open the package, my kids’ cat Boo was immediately on my desk to see what was in the bag. When I pulled out the square mat and put it on the floor, he was all over it (and under it too!). After playing on it for a few minutes, Taz came to see what this new thing was. He too spent several minutes rolling around and nibbling on the mat.

It’s now been about a week since we’ve had the mat, and while the scent has faded and they don’t go quite as crazy, Boo and 2 of our kittens have claimed this mat as their new bed. They absolutely LOVE it.

The mats and cat nip toys are very durable, and I’m surprised they are still in perfect condition. Boo especially can get wild while playing, and feared he would tear it apart. I was amazed to see not one flaw on it still (other than a few cat hairs, of course). The cat nip inside certainly made them excited and they tried very hard to get to it without success.

Louella’s Goodies currently has several options for purchasing these cute and very useful products. You can purchase the cat mats and simple cat toys separately, or together in a package. There is even an option for purchasing a “multiple cat collection”, which includes 2 cat mats, 2 small cat toys, and 2 large cat toys. If you have more than one cat or cats that don’t like to share, definitely go with this option!

Choosing the Right Cat Bed

Cat Beds No Comments »

Pet Accessories – Choosing the Right Dog and Cat Beds, Dog Clothing and Collars
By Nigel Read

A dog collar is a dog collar isn’t it? Well – even dog collars are getting more advanced these days. One example is the canny collars – a collar designed to stop your dog pulling on the lead. Its’ made from a simple dog collar with a slip line that fits over your dog’s nose and works with a ‘pressure and release’ system. This applies gentle pressure to the bridge of doggie’s nose when he starts to pull,. The pressure is released as soon as he stops. It’s more comfortable and less restrictive than a traditional head collar. The Canny Collar won’t jerk your dogs head sideways or ride up into the eyes. It’s a kind, safe and effective method of training.

And what about electric dog collars? The Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors has condemned the use of devices which deliver electric shocks to for training or behaviour problems. Users of devices like this need advanced training without which, pets can become distressed – as you might imagine. A dog experiencing a nasty shock to the neck will associate it with whatever it happens to be focusing on at the time. Unwanted side effects could occur when the dog being shocked becomes afraid of a particular area, or an owner, child, other dog etc. It’s also possible that the device could be triggered by external influences, or could malfunction, resulting in disastrous consequences for the dog. Others may be triggered by barking – enough to send a dog “around the bend” if shocks are received for an extended period. Training by punishing may be considered a sloppy and lazy way of trying to get a pet to do what the owner wishes. A dog trained in this way is unlikely to be happy, behaving in a certain way for fear of dire consequences – like a circus bear. These devices should only be used in exceptional circumstances, where other methods have failed. Owners with problem pets should understand that the unwanted behaviour can be altered winder kindness and patience – after all, would we train our kids with electric shocks when they didn’t do as they were told?
