Making sure, the scratching post or tree is high enough for the cat to reach and be able to scratch and claw.

Rubbing orange peel or lemon on the fabric or surface of the item can help with scratching or claw the item. Using a commercial cat repellent is another way to rid the scent on your items. Cats do not like plastic, covering your furniture with plastic till, the cat starts to use the post, or tree will help. Communicating with the cat with soft words as “no kitty you are not to scratch that, this is not the place”. Then taking the cat to the scratching area and showing them this is the place to scratch will help with the redirecting the energy of the cat. I’ve screwed 2x4s together and stapled carpet over it. Five gallon buckets covered in carpet give them a hidey hole inside….I at one point built a dog house and stapled carpet on the outside and roof. Rubbed cat nip into it, hung cat toys off it and called it a cat house. That was way cheaper than buying one.

Unfortunately, our cat only claws at the carpeted part, and never the rope. (Thankfully, she never claws the furniture.) I’ve tried putting catnip in the rope and playing with toys around the rope, but she just doesn’t seem interested. Won’t go for those cardboard scratching posts either.

There is an old saying:

You can lead a kitty to water…wait, Wrong saying.

You can buy a kitty anything and show it to them, and they’re going to do whatever the hell they want to anyway.

Serious answer. If you’ve tried catnip and toys, you’ve done all you can do.
Your kitty prefers the carpet and that is that.

If the scratching post has carpet on it, the cat has connected carpet with ok-to-scratch. Might be too late to break her now. Get another post that uses rope or tree bark or even cardboard and keep your cat out of the room with carpeting. Or spray the carpet with something she hates the smell of (my cats hate Febreeze).
