Does anyone have any easy ideas for making a Cat Scratching Post?

My son wants to make a homemade cat scratching post for our cat and was wondering if anyone has any easy ideas. Please tell us what kind of wood and material we need for it, also is it better to use nails or carpeting glue? Thank You!! ~~Happy Valentine’s Day Too~~

I have made several.

First use lumber which has *not* been pressure treated. Pressure treated lumber contains arsenic and you do not want your kitty ingesting poison.

Do not use glue in a place where your kitty might be able to scratch it out and or somehow ingest it.

I use 2×4′s cut to length and screwed together. I then wrap them in sisal. I have used carpet but sisal lasts much longer and is much cleaner. To attach the sisal I use a few screws at the beginning and the end of the wrap. Roughly 50 feet of 3/8" thick sisal will cover about 16" of doubled 2×4′s.

For the base of the post I use 2 pieces of 3/4" plywood screwed together wrapped in carpet (if you are making a relatively short post you can get away with a single piece but the extra mass at the bottom of the post really helps to keep it stable). I use staples underneath the base to attach the carpet.

I cut out a square of the carpet to attach the post to the base and attach it from the bottom with 4" screws.

You can get all of these supplies at Home Depot or Lowes.

If you want to make a large number of scratching posts and or some very large posts you can get sisal much less expensively and in lengths of up to 500 feet from http://www.mcmaster.com/ (I spent several hours searching the web for the best price).

If you have questions about any of this post them here and I will check back periodically.

Good Luck!

help with making a cat scratching post?

i want to make a cat pole. planning to use PVC pipe, wooden base, ropes and carpet like in link

http://www.howtodothings.com/pets-animals/how-to-make-a-sisal-rope-cat-scratching-post

problem: dont know whats the best way to stick the post n base together or if there is a better way of making this

would the PVC pole or the wood be more economical?

Id use wood too, some cats are funny about certain textures (mine don’t like glass) Id say 2" by 2" wood, adhesive for the carpet,(a little cat nip put on the back side of the carpet before fixing),square for strength & stability.Wood can be striped & re-coated with fabric/carpet but I don’t think pvc would do as well in the long run…good luck…

Where can I find cheap cat scratching posts?

Where can I find cheap cat scratching posts/trees, something like this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CAT-SCRATCHING-POST-ACTIVITY-CENTRE-PET-FURNITURE-NEW-/260639914124?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Pet_Supplies_Cats&var=&hash=item826338ebdd

Thanks :-)
Also, it must be able to be delivered to the U.K.

well i have 2 cats and we didn’t want to buy a scratching post so we made one and all you need is some glue some rope a round post 2 boxes some sand and a pillow (we used a tree log) first we covered the post in glue and rapped the rope around it until the whole post is covered in rope next we let it dry so the rope is stuck on and then we got a box and put sand in it, sellotaped the top and then made a hole for the post to go in put the post in and then got some duck tape so the sand wouldn’t come out and as a finishing touch we put a box with a pillow inside on the log (you have to glue the box on first) so the cat can have a comfy sitting place too.

This is what i did so it works hope it helps :)

Make your cat happy by giving them a sturdy scratching post. They’ll sharpen their claws — without tearing up your furniture.

To complete this How-To you will need:

Measuring tape
A 4 x 4 post
A saw
Three 2 x 6 boards, 12-inch long
Two 2 x 6 boards, 18-inch long
Eight 3-inch wood screws
A power drill with screwdriver bit
Carpet scraps
A staple gun
Catnip (optional)
A dangling cat toy (optional)

Step 1: Decide on dimension

Determine the length of your scratching post and cut the post with a saw to fit. It should be a few inches longer than the length of your cat.

Tip: Make the base sturdy enough to support the post and the weight of your cat.

Step 2: Make the first layer

Lay the three 12-inch boards side by side, so the ends are flush.

Step 3: Attach the second layer

Place the two 18-inch boards on top, crosswise. Saw any overhang so the second layer is flush with the first.

Step 4: Screw layers together

Using the power drill, screw the second layer onto the first layer with four 3-inch screws. This will serve as your base.

Step 5: Cover base

Cover the base with a carpet scrap and staple it in place.

Tip: Use short, bristly carpet, such as Berber.

Step 6: Attach post

Position the post in the center of the base and attach it with a screw on each corner. Drill the screws in diagonally, starting near the bottom of the post so that the screw makes it through both post and base.

Step 7: Cover post

Staple carpet scraps to cover the post.

Tip: Rub catnip on the post or hang a dangling cat toy from the top.

Step 8: Settle in

Settle in for hours of entertainment as your cat tears into their new scratching post.
