Fling-ama-String Cat Toy UPGRADE
Fling-ama-String… just another cat toy from Cousin Murf? Maybe so, but it’s one they have yet to get tired of! Gracie here likes it so much, we had to design an easy fix around the meager power supply of 3 AA batteries. We built 3 Radio Shack D Cell battery holders onto a small piece of wood, then clipped a metal clothes hanger hook to it and hung it on the other inside door knob. We used a cheap (mechanical ticking) timer switch that you can find at the hardware store- for bathroom ceiling fans, maybe $16. The D cells last a long time and it shuts itself off after 5 or 20 minutes- our Gracie here has had enough after ten minutes, anyway. We were going through three AA batteries every week- with the increased power of D Cells and the timer- it’s lasted 6 weeks so far… and still going strong! Fling-ama-String seems to have revived our 19 year old Himilayan from the clutches of death for one last romp- he loves it, too.

How do I get my cat to use the scratching post?
I just bought my cat a scratching post, but I don’t think he knows what it is yet. He just kinda sniffs it, then scratches my computer chair again. How do I get him to learn to scratch the post?
(I don’t particularly mind that he scratches the chair, because that’s the only furniture he scratches and it’s already beat up. I just want him to know that the post is there for him to scratch, too!)
The fastest and easiest way to get a cat to use a new post is to play with a toy around the post. When he goes to grab the toy (use an interactive toy that has a long reach to protect your hands) his claws go into the scratching post.
Some posts have carpeting that has too thick a pile and cats cannot get their claws into it. Some scratching posts are put too far out of the way and cats ignore it. It helps to put it where the chair is or right next to the chair. You can move it later after he has started using it.
If your cat like catnip, rather than use the herb loose or soaking it in a spray, you can put some into the toe of a long sock and tie the top of the sock very tightly around the post with a sturdy knot. This helps prevent the herb from falling onto the floor and encouraging your cat to scratch the carpeting instead.
Should you give your cat toys with feathers if you have birds?
Even though most of my cats are afraid of my birds, they know the damage those beaks can cause, I always am a little hesitant when it comes to toys with feathering.
Am I worrying too much or could they start associating the birds as play toys?
Also I would appreciate only hearing from someone who really knows what they are talking about, meaning they really know about cats. Because I love my cats and birds the same, they are my babies. I don’t want to take away the toys if I don’t have to, but at the same time, I don’t want to risk the lives of my birds.
Well, I wouldn’t do it. Just to be safe. My cat used to be an indoor/outdoor cat and he never killed anything. We bought him a bird toy and a mouse toy. A few weeks later, he started bringing dead birds and mice into the house =/
So I definately wouldn’t recommend it. I think they would associate the feathers with the bird and lose their fear over time. Try a mouse toy instead.
